When a new visitor or potential customer comes to your site for the first time, study after study shows that you only have a few moments to capture their imagination. That means your website needs to load fast and give them what they are looking for. While many photographers still persist with slow loading, heavy flash websites, there is a trend to faster loading sites that can be equally appealing. The biggest problem though, is that images, which are a photographer’s stock and trade and a ‘must have’ for any photographer’s site are also often quite large files and therefore slow loading, especially for web surfers on slower connections. That has been a problem until now.

Smush.it is a great little web based utility that is of enormous benefit to photographers with a lot of large and heavy images on their website. It simply takes the photo and reproduces it with no loss of aesthetic, but at a smaller file size. As you can imaging, on an image heavy website, this can lead to significant savings in loading time (and means people will be more likely to stick around to see what you have to offer as a photographer). All you need to do is input the URLs of the images you want to streamline like this:

Then you just right click on the image link, save it and upload it in place of your original heavy, slow-loading image. Now, if you’re even more determined to make your photography site faster, you can download this great little Firefox Plug-in which incorporates Smush.It, but also analyses other parts of a website to determine how it can be made to load faster.

With photography websites, however, the largest issue is usually going to be large image file sizes. The aim of any photographer’s website is to get eyeballs on photos.

CubicExplorer, a Free Explorer Alternative

CubicExplorer is a file manager which is aimed to replace Windows Explorer. It’s goal is to be easy and pleasant to use but still have enough power for more advanced usage.

CubicExplorer is registry free application. It does not write to registry, all settings are stored in files at installation folder.

Up to version 0.90 RC2, Cubic Explorer does not access internet. That might change in the future however when features like online update are implemented.

Screen It is a small utility (only 150 Kb) designed to simplify Windows daily usage by organizing application windows with in series of Virtual Desktops. Unused running applications are hidden in different "desktop" workspace.

As computers become more powerful, it becomes possible to run a great many programs at the same time. This can make the desktop and its task bar crowded and unmanageable. To combat this overload, Screen-It creates 2 virtual desktops (screen pages) on your single physical one. Only one screen page is visible at a time. Screen-It will organize your work by creating multiple workspaces.

GMail Drive Shell Extension

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium. GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer.

GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to. GMail Drive shell extension is a tool that creates a virtual filesystem.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1,000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with (up to this date, GMail offers space more than 2.7 Gb per user account). With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again. When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account.

The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer. You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the GMail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in GMail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters), and it doesn't make full use of the secure internet protocols available.

You can run FreeDOS on pretty much anything. While can run FreeDOS on a dedicated PC, now it's most often run inside a PC emulator. You can find PC emulators for all computer platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac.) If you are new to DOS, we recommend you use an emulator to install and boot FreeDOS. You can even run FreeDOS using a PC emulator written in Java, right in your web browser! For Microsoft Windows user, you might want to download Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (It's provided for free. Review available on this blogspot article).

FreeDOS is open source software; you can view and edit our source code. Most FreeDOS programs are distributed under the GNU General Public License ("GNU GPL") which means they are not only open source software, but they are Free software.

Download FreeDOS, available in several options:

Floppy Disk Boot Image - 1.44 Mb - Raw Image of FreeDOS Boot Disk.
To write this image file into physical disk, use RaWrite utility.
CD Image (Base file, contains core distribution files) - 7.9 Mb - CD ISO Image.
You can use any CD Burner application with Image Burning capability to burn this image file into actual CD-ROM disc.
CD Image (Base file with LiveCD portion and the SRC_BASE disk set) - 49 Mb - CD ISO Image.

DOS on VPC 2007

Installing DOS VM Additions under VPC 2007

MS-DOS is no longer officially supported under Virtual PC 2007, as such the DOS Virtual Machine Additions are not included with Virtual PC 2007. However - if you want to run DOS on Virtual PC 2007 - you can get the DOS Additions by download the DOS Additions .VFD file (1.4Mb, already extracted from Virtual PC 2004 Free Package for your convenience) and insert it into the floppy drive of your virtual machine under Virtual PC 2007. Run the install program from the floppy under the virtual machine.

With this addition, you can enable CD-ROM and mouse support for your DOS Application and enabling file sharing with host operating system.

As I have already mentioned - this is not officially supported by Microsoft - but should work fine.

Virtual PC lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Use virtual machines to run operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows, and OS/2. You can run multiple operating systems at once on a single physical computer and switch between them as easily as switching applications—instantly, with a mouse click. Virtual PC is perfect for any scenario in which you need to support multiple operating systems, whether you use it for tech support, legacy application support, training, or just for consolidating physical computers.

With Microsoft® Virtual PC 2007, you can create and run one or more virtual machines, each with its own operating system, on a single computer. This provides you with the flexibility to use different operating systems on one physical computer.

Virtual PC emulates a standard PC and its associated hardware. Thus, it can be used to run nearly all operating systems available for the PC. However, issues can arise when trying to install uncommon operating systems that have not been specifically targeted in the development of Virtual PC. It is a godsend for developers who need to test their applications on a wide variety of operating systems.

Virtual PC emulates a 32-bit Intel Pentium 4 processor (but virtualizes the host processor on Windows versions) with an Intel 440BX chipset, a standard SVGA VESA graphics card(S3 Trio 64 PCI with 4 MByte Video RAM adjustable up to 16 MByte), a system BIOS from American Megatrends (AMI), a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 PnP (native Vista audio when Vista acts as host and guest), and a DEC 21140 Ethernet Network card.

Virtual PC 2007 hosts can also run on 64-bit versions of Windows (i.e., Windows Vista). It was released on February 19, 2007. This version supports Microsoft Windows Vista (All Editions) and is available for free.

Not all programs are guaranteed to work because they can use undocumented features of hardware, exotic timings, or unsupported opcodes, although overall compatibility can be considered satisfactory.

The download came in the form of a zip file (size vary between 30-60 Mb based on your language selection. It's approximately 30.5 Mb for English version), and it is installed quickly and easily on my PC without requiring any reboots (except if you have Connectix Virtual PC installed - it's a precursor of current Virtual PC that being developed by Connectix before it was acquired by Microsoft). When run, the application presents a small window that contains the user's various virtual operating system images. As there were no images installed, you should install new operating system as it is a fresh new PC with blank hard-disk-drive.

Virtual PC uses your existing CD-ROM drives as devices in the VM, so it is easy to install a new operating system on a blank virtual hard drive by simply putting the CD in and waiting for it to autoboot. A Sound Blaster sound card and a generic network adapter are also provided as virtual devices. In several system, you should set the network settings to Shared Networking (NAT) before your new installed operating system would recognize and configure the network adapter. The virtual hard drive is auto-resizing, so it starts out as zero bytes and only grows as much as it needs to. The Linux distro installed without incident, although it did take long hours to complete the process.
